Research

Contribute to research on distributed work and learning.

FCL is conducting ongoing research on how people work, learn, and lead in remote and distributed settings. Findings are published in our monthly briefs and will inform upcoming publications by Freddrick Logan, PhD. We are recruiting participants across four sectors.

We are looking for research participants (not hiring) who are willing to talk with us about their experience of distributed work or learning: what changed when the work left the building, what they had to learn or unlearn, and what has held up. Conversations take about 45 minutes by video, every perspective is welcome, including skeptics, and participants are quoted under a pseudonym unless they choose otherwise.

Seeking research participants (not hiring) · October 2026 to March 2027

Participants

Four sectors.

Distributed workplace leaders

CEOs, Chief People Officers, and Heads of Remote at companies operating fully or substantially distributed. Interested in your operating model, what has worked, and what has failed.

K-12 distributed learning administrators

Leaders at virtual academies, hybrid schools, dual enrollment programs, and homeschool cooperatives. Interested in how distributed secondary education actually functions.

Higher education leaders in distributed programs

Provosts, deans, program directors, and faculty leading online degrees, competency-based programs, and hybrid learning initiatives.

Continuing education and workforce development leaders

Bootcamp founders, corporate CLOs, credentialing body leaders, and community college workforce development directors.

What it involves

Three ways to take part.

Choose whichever fits the time you have. None of them requires the others.

  • Research interview

About 45 minutes over Zoom, recorded with permission, transcribed and analyzed under confidentiality protocols. Pseudonym by default.

  • Written response

Three to five targeted questions delivered by email. A 30–45 minute time investment.

  • Thinking partner

Occasional informal contact as the research develops.

All participation is voluntary, unpaid, and can be withdrawn at any time.

In return

What participants receive.

  • Advance access to FCL's monthly research briefs
  • Optional acknowledgment in publications, or full anonymity — the participant's choice
  • Copies of resulting publications
  • Access to synthesized findings before public release
  • A standing invitation to FCL's distributed practitioner network

Ethics

Consent and confidentiality.

This research follows established qualitative research ethics standards. All participants complete an informed consent form before any data is collected. Data is stored securely, identities are anonymized in publications unless a participant requests otherwise, and participants retain the right to review and approve any direct quotation attributed to them before publication.

Online consent

Give consent online.

If you've read the consent information and want to take part, you can record your consent here. It takes about two minutes.
